Glass chips make for a nice-looking fire, but they don’t hold heat or reflect radiant heat very well.

Lava rock works better and is more practical. Lava rack holds heat better and hides any imperfections (like things falling into the fire pit, leaves, etc).

Glass chips would be prettier, but will require more maintenance with cleaning them out. Lava will be more practical.

Or you could try using both. You could put glass chips in the middle of the fire pit with lava rock in the main outside ring.

Building a yard fire pit is fun and you should experiment with what you want. If you don’t like what you make, you can always modify it.
